It all started in a noisy backroom, full of smoke and serious-looking people playing funny-looking cards. Some jazz was being played outside, and people cheered, drunk and happy, or doing their best to believe that they were. The cheers didn't reach inside. There was too much at stake, and too many guns visible around the three tables. A judge was sitting at mine, along with two mobsters, and a dame with a foreign accent.

For us, it was the game or the Hyena Queen. At the time, she hadn't quite clawed her way to the top of the underworld, but it was already pretty clear that being on her bad side was a stupid move. She hadn't appreciated our recent blunder, but with money, we could buy ourselves back into her good side. At least that was the idea.

So we had the cards. We had a plan. We even had Luck on our side, sort of.

And then, the dealer revealed the last card and things got seriously wrong.
